Charting a Course: How I Found Teaching Among the Stars

Rediscovering Myself Later in Life
As a woman quickly approaching my 50s, a wife of a US Sailor, and a mother of five incredible children, the idea of returning to work once felt like a distant dream. For over 20 years, my days revolved around managing a busy household, raising my children, and supporting my family’s needs. During that time, I often wondered if I’d ever find the courage to pursue my own passions again. Despite those doubts, my loving husband never let me forget that I told him that once our youngest started school, it was my turn to return to the working field. His quiet encouragement was a gentle reminder that it was okay—perhaps even necessary—to nurture my talents and dreams.
Taking the Leap and Finding My Passion
It took me nearly three years, and a significant move to a new duty station in Guam, for me to finally take the leap. I started as a substitute teacher at McCool Elementary Middle School, a DoDEA school, feeling vulnerable and uncertain in a classroom full of bright-eyed children. The fear of not being able to keep up after so many years away from the workforce weighed heavily on me. I questioned my abilities daily—Could I do this? Was I too old? Did I have the stamina? But step by small step, I realized that my love for children and my desire to contribute far outweighed my fears.
Every moment spent in the classroom was a revelation. I found a simple, yet profound joy in connecting with students, sharing stories and songs, and watching their eyes light up with discovery. That joy deepened last year, during my almost full year as a long-term preschool aide. Working with those young learners, and amazing teachers, awakened something inside me—a love for teaching, nurturing, and inspiring that I didn’t fully recognize before. It was during that time I understood that teaching wasn’t just a job; it was my calling.
Alignment and Looking Ahead
Finding a school, after a year of researching, where everything lined up—supportive colleagues, a mission aligned with my values, and an environment that felt welcoming—felt like fate. It was as if the cosmos had aligned to guide me to the right place. This journey has shown me that age is just a number, and it’s never too late to start a new chapter. Every small step I took built my confidence, and I now see that my path is just beginning.
Deciding to return to work after so many years was not easy, but it has been one of the most rewarding choices I’ve ever made. With the support of my family, the love I have for teaching, and my own resilience, I am excited about what lies ahead—and I hope my story inspires others to embrace their own new beginnings, no matter where they are in life.
